Foreign languages

The research topics addressed by the linguists at  DISPI have a natural interdisciplinary vocation, which finds a significant echo in the links with most of the research areas present within the Department (anthropological, historical, sociological, juridical, political science) . In particular, they concern the following strands:

• linguistics of migration and study of phenomena deriving from linguistic contact in migratory contexts, with particular attention to the educational sector (which includes not only primary and secondary education, but also the foreign university component, which reflects the peculiarity of the Ligurian capital, the place of residence of a large community of Hispanic speakers, in this case Ecuadorians);

• the language and the discourse on Europe, also in the perspective of the growth of Eurosceptic movements;

• public speaking and new ways of disseminating knowledge for the benefit of wider spheres and fields than the audience of academics;

• language policy based on the indications of the European Council on inclusive and pluricultural education. The forms of political communication and the analysis of specialized languages, with particolar reference to political, diplomatic and economic discourse, through the use of Discourse Analysis (DA), focusing the attention on rhetorical, stylistic and lexical tools used for the purpose of persuasion and consensus as well as the analysis of lexical loans and the use of the English language in an International context, thus touching the boundaries of studies on intercultural communication.

Multilingual Terminology Research Center - CeRTeM: created in February 2005 on the initiative of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures of the University of Genoa, it is an interdepartmental center (involving the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures, the Department of Political and International Sciences and the Department of Italian Studies, Roman Studies, Antiquities, Arts and Entertainment) and inter-university which currently includes teachers of foreign languages and literatures (Arabic, French, English, Russian, Spanish, German), of Italian language and general linguistics, belonging to to various Departments, Research Bodies and foreign “La mejora del Aprendizaje escolar y la cohesión social a través de la utilización educativa de los fondos de conocimiento e identidad de los aprendices y sus familias”

The disciplines relating to the study and teaching of foreign languages have a strong interdisciplinary vocation. This vocation is reflected in the attitude of the teachers in the area to establish and consolidate fruitful collaborative relationships with the other disciplines present in the department. Consequently, they have effectively contributed to the implementation of projects and initiatives that we have already had the opportunity to consider, such as the conference of 3-5 February 2021 entitled “Speeches on Europe: Narrating EU integration. Speeches and speakers from 1946 to 2018 "or the more recent international conference on  "Euroscepticisms. Resistance and opposition to the Community / European Union from its origins to the present day ". The teachers of the area in question are also active nationally and internationally, as attested by their participation in the academic associations of the sector (Associazione Italiana di Anglistica - AIA, European Society for the Study of English - ESSE, University Association of European Studies - AUSE ) and from the relationships maintained and formalized with foreign university institutions (for example, with the bilateral agreement with the University of Girona aimed at “La mejora del Aprendizaje escolar y la cohesion social a través de la utilización educative de los fondos de conocimento e identidad de los aprendices y sus familias”.
